DMAIC is an abbreviation for Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control. DMAIC is a data-driven improvement cycle used as a core tool in six sigma projects.

DMAIC refers to a methodology or Six Sigma Process Improvement Methodology for improving the processes of a business in an organization. It’s an integral part of business quality management six sigma implementation initiative. DMAIC is 5 fundamental interconnected steps involved in applying a strategy for achieving six sigma. phases of six sigma process.

DMAIC with business process improvement perspective:

  • Define the Customer, they are Critical to Quality (CTQ) issues, and the Core Business Process involved.
  • Measure the performance of the Core Business Process involved.
  • Analyse the data collected and process map to determine root causes of defects and opportunities for improvement.
  • Improve the target process by designing appropriate solutions to fix and prevent problems.
  • Control the improvements to keep the process on the new course.

DMAIC is a 5 fundamental Steps involved in applying the breakthrough strategy for achieving Six Sigma. These steps are:-

  • Define

This phase defines the project. It identifies critical customer requirements and links them to business needs. It also defines a project charter and the business processes to be undertaken for Six Sigma Process.

  • Measure

This phase involves selecting product characteristic, mapping the respective process, making the necessary measurements and recording the results of the process. This is essentially a data collection phase.

  • Analyze

In this phase, an action plan is created to close the “gap” between how things currently work and how the organization would like them to work in order to meet the goals for a particular product or service. This phase also requires organizations to estimate their short term and long term capabilities.

  • Improve

This phase involves improving processes/product performance characteristics for achieving desired results and goals. This phase involves the application of scientific tools and techniques for making tangible improvements in profitability and customer satisfaction.

  • Control

This Phase requires the Six Sigma Process conditions to be properly documented and monitored through statistical process control methods. After a “setting in” period, the process capability should be reassessed. Depending upon the results of such a follow-up analysis, it may be sometimes necessary to revisit one or more of the preceding phases.
